The media work based learning module aims to prepare students for a career in the media industry. The WBL module enables students to develop employability skills and competencies, understand the nature of work, and work toward developing a portfolio of skills and competencies to facilitate the transition into graduate level employment.

Students are encouraged to develop media practice in a variety of areas. They engage in media design practices, video making and production, digital photography and editing, journalistic writing, digital media design and media research among other things. Students develop practical, industry-valued skills on professional-standard equipment and expand their capacity for creativity and innovation.

What can our students do for your company?

Students can take and complete placement roles and/or projects during term time only:

  • Autumn Term: between 19 October 2020 and 9 January 2021

Our students can contribute in a variety of ways. Students, individually or in groups, can be involved in a wide range of tasks and/or projects online and remotely ranging from:

  • General office tasks and roles in film, TV, newspapers and other media outlets
  • Report writing
  • News, magazines research
  • Film, TV program review writing
  • Journalistic article writing
  • Developing digital imaging; image design
  • Digital photographic reproduction and image manipulation
  • Basic graphic / poster design
  • Assisting with social media marketing
  • Content creation for social media
  • Content creation for digital marketing/advertising

Suitable roles and projects include: Assisting in film, television and radio production. Basic social media marketing skills. General office roles in film, television and other media outlets. Suitable roles include: Various roles assisting on film, TV promotional, marketing etc. Providing reviews, film or TV content outlines. General office roles in film or television or other media outlets. Assisting with marketing copy for related content. Journalistic / news content writing.

RELEVANT KEY SKILLS TO DEVELOP: Professional writing (mags/news article). News research. Filmmaking / editing skills. Basic journalistic skills.

BA Digital Media

Suitable roles include: Assisting in Web Design. Video / sound editing. Basic UX Designing. Basic graphic / poster designing. Web content manager/editor. Digital photography/image editor. Content creation for social media. Content creation for digital marketing/advertising.

RELEVANT KEY SKILLS TO DEVELOP: Web design (basic / beginners). Video editing. Image / graphic design (basic). UX and usability design. Social Media marketing/ advertising (some students)

PROJECT EXAMPLES INCLUDE BUT NOT LIMITED TO:

Social Media Marketing Assistant

  • Assisting the Editor, Co-editor, and Social Media Manager
  • Developing and creating content for social media platforms
  • Writing and copy-editing
  • Social media scheduling tools
  • Conducting engagement across all social media platforms
  • Attending team meetings where necessary (via google meet)
  • Undertaking market research
  • Assisting the Editor and Co-editor on marketing related work
  • Undertaking research into advertisement (for and by the magazine/company)
  • Using Adobe Photoshop

    Simple evaluation and feedback to each student at the end of the placement period with a short google feedback form.

    Sign a learning agreement form to confirm that they are in a working partnership with London Met students.

    Guidance and mentoring; the provision of a dedicated person to answer students' queries over the duration of the project.
  • Q4 - Case à cocher
    Disponilility for a quick video call between with the company/organisation with the London Metropolitan University team to establish a relationship and confirm the organisation/company's suitability for the course.
